The Norwegian Association of Midwives is a trade union for midwives, as well as an arena for professional development.
The organisation has approximately 2200 members.
The Norwegian Association of Midwives is independent and national, and organises the majority of midwives in Norway. The association was founded in 1908, and is among the oldest trade unions for women in Norway.
The purpose of The Norwegian Association of Midwives is to:
- protect the interests of the members in issues concerning salary and employment
- protect the autonomy of midwives in coherence with the tradition of midwifery
- work for an independent education for midwives which strengthens the profession
- maintain and develop the professional and ethical standard of midwives
- strengthen international awareness, both through the organisation and its members
The National Assembly is the association's highest decision-making body, and is held every third year. The Assembly makes decisions about superior aims and objectives.
The Norwegian Association of Midwives has union representatives at the different workplaces that protect the interests of the members at their workplace.
The Norwegian Association of Midwives has 19 local branches that serve the members in each region.
The Norwegian Association of Midwifes publishes the magazine “Tidsskrift for jordmødre” with 9 issues each year. The magazine is a forum for both organisational and professional issues.
All midwives with a Norwegian authorisation and students can become members of The Norwegian Association of Midwives. The membership includes:
- assistance in negotiations and other employment issues
- legal assistance
- liability insurance
- members discount on private insurance
- members discount on courses and seminars arranged by the association
- assistance from the union representatives and local branch
- subscription to the magazine “Tidsskrift for Jordmødre”
The Norwegian Association of Midwives is a member of The Nordic Association of Midwives and International Confederation of Midwives (ICM).
